First Burning Man Meeting 2005

We had our first BM'05 meeting at McSoreley's last night. For those that couldn't make it, you were dearly missed. Of those that came, thank you.

As for the proceedings and discussions, here it goes:

1. We confirmed that we would like to register under the "Elation Station" name.
2. We would like to try to be on a corner this year.
3. Claudia will be responsible for registering our camp once again this year, since she did so last year, and is now the chosen expert.
4. Sailor Dave's crew of about 8 people will be departing from Portland, OR. They will be bringing a 22 foot wide canvas shade structure, as well as other goodies. They will be driving a Suburban and another one or two smaller cars. Dave and a few of his people will be leaving right after the burn, since Dave is departing on a wonderful trek to Spain and Lebanon, thereafter. This means that we need to structure the camp in such a way as to be able to take apart part of the camp a day or two in advance.
5. Dave's crew (maybe we should find out their names), will be also contributing to the expenses of the truck and the camp, but the amount will be less than those coming from SF. I will soon compile a spreadsheet with expense projections.
6. We will be renting a similar size truck this year.
7. Water will be communal like last year.
8. Food will be communal to an extent. We would like to prepare as much food in advance as possible, which will save a lot of money, and will result in tastier food. Bill also suggested buying a hot-plate type of heating device that plugs into an electrical outlet. We will also bring a grill, because everyone likes charcoal tasting food. Some food, due to dietary reasons of vegetarianism, kosherism, and lactose-intoleralism, and whatever-else-ism, will have to be considered seperately.
9. We're getting a 3000 watt Honda quiet generator from Home Depot which rents it out for $200 for 2 weeks. It uses 1 gallon of gas every 24 hours.
10. We need about 4 couches and 2 coffee tables this year, due to the larger size of the group. We would still like to have a living-room feel in our common area. We need a space in San Francisco (Andrew's brother's place?) to store the couches and the coffee table.
11. This year, we'll be using orange rope.
12. Bill is writing a treatise on knot tying.
13. PVC pipes to hold the perimiter of the parachute will be 8 feet tall.
14. Bill has procured some sails as well, and we will be using the sails that we brought last year to make some shade structure.
15. Bikes need to be purchased in SF. The cheaper the better, but don't buy broken bikes, they are not useful. Bill has a 4 bike car bike rack.
16. Ahem.
17. The NYC outpost will host a fundraiser some time in May, probably at Bill's house, or maybe at Sam's new or old apartment, or Jackson's place in Bushwick. It will consist of 2 kegs of good beer and magic punch. We'll charge people $5-10.
18. Can't remember anything else.

Once again, thanks for coming, and we shall meet again.

Please add your thoughts and if I forgot something add that as well.

Simon

P.S. This is the winner of the Borg2 grant. Watch the video, it's quite funny: check it.

Two things worth mentioning

First of all, i think many of you guys in new york would find this a fasicanting piece of theater to see. I saw her puppet production of the odyessey last year and was mesmerized.
Secondly, I was reading on the burning man website that a special feature of the-structure-beneath-the-man this year is going to be a mechanism used by the citizens of black rock to slowly rotate the man. Really cool yet unnerving for those who use the man's stable positioning to orient themselves. I swear, check it out, it's under the more info of the theme explanation. Very elaborate.
Hope the meeting was fun and fruitful!

BORG 2 news

Just a reminder that voting has begun on the Pile o' Pennies art disaster fund (the $1000 worth of pennies granted to one lucky art project). You can vote 'till Sunday Midnight (3 AM Monday on the East), but only if you've already registered. For those of you who have registered, you probably already got an email describing all this, but just in case go here to get a password, then check your mail and go here to vote.

For the rest of you, see the results here. Detailed explanations of the projects can be found here. Looks like the Flaming Dance Dance Revolution and Big-Assed Toaster are going to have to fight for it. Wow, sorry for the scratch 'n' sniff collection of links, but there's a lot to see.

BORG2 news

A recent fundraising party for the Borg2 foundation (covered in the entry "Flying Fucking Burning Pigs") ended up generating around 7 grand for the Borg2 project. Because the centerpiece of the party was two giant wire-frame paper mache pigs filled with everybody's spare change, almost $3,000 of this was in the form of mangled, burnt change dropped from the innerds of those two mannities. The video of the burn can be seen here. When the dust cleared, the horrid process of counting and rolling the change into viable forms of currency began. Of course, as any self-respecting punk-rock off-beat group of volunteers would do, they soon said "fuck it" and decided to give their first art grant immediately in the form of $1000 in pennies. Proposals for the grant have been submitted and are being voted upon on March 18th. Deadline for voter registration is the 16th, and you can register by signing up to their mailing list. Check out the proposals: Here. I personally like the Black Rock City Subway system, though I'm not convinced of its feasability. Ruth, you might not like the proposal to plant a tomato field in the desert. All in all, it's worth looking over. The submissions are for some reason in DF1LM format, and for some reason the bears are still somewhat funny (you'll see what I mean). If anybody has an idea, it's not too late to post it, but I think this is better just to know what others are up to. Don't forget, it's up to us to decide who wins so hurry up and sign up to vote!

This is the most recent Guardian article detailing current Borg2 politics:

Party

So, people, what about that fundraising party. I thought we had such a great plan, and now you're all quiet.

Also, why don't we get a rough count of people that are coming this year and your recruiting estimates.

As for myself, Monica and I are coming. Additionally, there's slight chance that Monica's friend Brooke (some of you know her) will be coming with 3-4 friends (so make that 2 people at most).

Also, I talked with Matvey, and he said that he is definitely coming with his girlfriend Anya. I won't believe it until I see the tickets, though.

Who else?

S.

No Draft- No Way: Rally to Stop the Draft

March 19 is the second anniversary of the invassion in Iraq- please join the world wide rallies that will not only cry out against the war but will also try their damnest to Stop the Draft before it Starts. It may just be another march, but it is a step towards action.

'Despite what politicians say, there is a high probability that the Bush Administration will attempt to reinstate the draft.' Please follow this link to read what independant journalists and activitsts have to say about the threat of a draft... http://gnn.tv/headlines/1269/Group_rallies_to_stop_the_draft
This affects all of us, our friends, brothers, sisters, lovers, and parents. Read this and take part in the March 19th rallies!

For New Yorkers: MARCH TO CENTRAL PARK ON SAT. MARCH 19th, 2005

THE WHOLE WORLD WILL BE MARCHING AND WATCHING

10:00 AM - Marcus Garvey Park
124th St. and 5th Ave. to 125th St. and Lennox Military Recruiting Station...

NOON - Central Park, East Meadow
97th St. and 5th Ave.

3:00 PM - March to Mayor Bloomberg's house
Demand: FUND OUR CITIES - NOT WAR!

Learn more about the march at http://www.troopsoutnow.org/

On this day New Yorkers will join the world-wide antiwar movement and peacefully march agaisnt the war and the draft. Help us make history. I'm sure the mainstream media will hardly cover these marches, but I wil be there with a camera in hand trying to make my own news coverage.

If we can all unite for the craziness and fun that is Burningman and create a community out of dust, I'm sure we can all take part in the protests against the human right violations that are commited everyday at Abu Ghraib, the lost lives of innocent Iraqi citizens, and our American soldiers that are dying everyday.

You can either bitch and complain or you can take peaceful and informed actions. This is a call to action.
