Purchasing Water

one day left and still so much to do! we've got a lot to accomplish tomorrow. simon, please give me a call when you read this if we haven't talked already. hope your flight was smooth and unevenful. just so we're clear, when i buy the rest of the water i planned to get tomorrow morning, i'm getting 2 gallons a day for each of the seven people staying at this house, and then all 14 people's 5 gallon lemonade donation. i think it might be easier to have the reimbursement for that to go one person, and then each group can pay back it's person for the personal water. are you guys getting for anita and monica?
also, the plan was to caravan from y'all's neighborhood back to andrew's tomorrow to bring the vast majority, if not all, of what you guys have for the truck. i plan to drive out there if needed to have an extra car for it. i'm not sure if andrew can too. depends on what time it goes down. later in the day would really be best, but call me and let me know what time works for y'all.
we're also going to haight street, japantown, and a camping store tomorrow, so if anyone who can't get to one of those needs something specific, let us know.
guys, i'm so stoked for this! see everyone so soon!!

Meet the neighbors

It's time to meet the neighbors...

This is not by any means a complete list of those around us, only those
who organized themselves enough to register. It's a pretty big list, of
only those immediately surrounding us.

Peace!

Less than 10 days till Burning Man 2004 starts...

NEAR TO
Recess in Excess - Venus and 8:30 =100 x 50

The Mystery Neighbor!!!

Contraptionists - Venus and 8:30 =100 x 200
The Contraptionists at 826 Venus, includes KittyTrim By The BushWhacker (Special hygiene services for women. Just think a minute of what the name implies, if you are wondering what the services are), come in to a chill space where guests, friends and neighbors can cool off with a snow cone or sip a cool smoothy at the Nebula Lounge or get a Burningman stamp tattoo or help inflate the wind dancers dancing out front as the Contraptionists ply the playa in their quirky creations.
Hometown: Boulder, CO

The Contraptionists' Corner centrally located at 8:26 and Venus Street. The Contraptionists will be tinkering on a variety of projects: building and repairing Art Bikes; installing and maintaining the (noise and emittion- free) campwide Solar Grid; or building complex circuitry to power bizzare Costumes and Props.

The Contraptionists' Corner will consist of several large private shade tents for sleeping quarters in the rear, and a huge shaded communal space with sitting area, kitchen, and dinning room facing the Street.

Serveral adjacent structures will provide a number of public/interactive services: Smoothy Bar, Kitty Trim by the Bushwhacker, Desert Art temporary tattoos, and other yet to be confirmed "Must See/Must Do" attractions...

If you are in the neighborhood feel free to stop by and see some first rate contraptions in the works. If you time it right, you could find a cold drink and cool conversation, a place to ask questions about design and construction or show off your own amazing contraptions!

Contraptionisis' Corner is a loose coalition of creative and inspired individuals, an eclectic mix of hobbiests, tinkerers, and creative constructionists, and while we'll not be hosting a 24 hr Theme Camp we invite the Black Rock public to stop by and say "Hi."

Howdy

Greetings,

Im new to the weblog thingie. It is scary and unfamiliar to me so I will be brief. My names Lisa, Im coming to burning man and was told to post and find a ride up to black rock city from san fran now, anybody got a spare car seat? I'll be getting into SF late on the 27th with my friend Sam who will also be taking part in the experience (andrew has been kind enough to volunteer to pick us both up from the airport friday). Sorry for jumping in so late, I didnt decide I was coming until most recently. Thanks for any help you folks can give me.

Water & Ruth & Transportation

Ok, as you know everybody needs to bring water. The recommended amount is 1.5 gallons per person per day, that's including your shower needs. We will have a portable shower. How many gallons did we decide everybody will contribute to the lemonade stand? Was it 10 gallons of water, or 5? I don't remember.

From last year's experience, too much water won't hurt, but we took too much, considering that we weren't taking showers everyday.

Secondly, has anyone heard from Ruth recently? Where is she and when is she coming to SF?

Has everybody figured out how they're getting to and from Burning Man? Yura, Paul, Helen and I are driving up and back in Yura's car. Andrew and Bill are driving the truck. Everybody else, I don't know. Figure it out.

Dinero

Hey all,

I have now received money from just about everyone, thank you! payments should be on the way from paul, lisa and claudia. Please send these to me a.s.a.p.

if you have purchased things for our camp and need to be reimbursed, please bring the receipts to the playa - or send me an email detailing what your expenses are and the total amount you need to receive. this would probably be easier than dealing with receipts on the playa.

once everyone pays in we should have a budget of approx $1950. Any money that we do not spend will be divided up and dispersed back to you all. I don't think we anticipate spending more than this... hopefully.

FYI, for those of you left to pay.. if you are sending money via paypal using a credit or debit card - please add $4.65 to the amount you are sending as this is the amount of the fee i have to pay when receiving $150. thanks.

Thanks.

EL Wire Orders

I'm going to visit Cool Neon at their soldering party on Saturday. last year they offered some really good sales so it was worth getting there personally. Anybody who wants wire, go to their website : www.coolneon.com and let me know what you want. It's typically $1 per foot, and there's a serious discount once I go over 100 feet, so please order something! I can also try to bargain with them for a full roll of the stuff for the parachute, but do we still want it? It might cost $200 to EL wire the parachute. It'll be fucking awesome but is it worth it? Please let me know by Saturday!

List of lists.....

This is simon's list of necessary objects.....

More after the jump:

OK, so we're getting pretty close to take-off, and we still need to procure a number of things, even though the money is still trickling in and not everybody has decided whether they're going or not.

Meanwhile, I compiled a list of things that need to be procured/purchased.  I'm sending it out, and please reply to burningmilk@yahoogroups.com for any additions to the list.  I am sure I forgot a lot of things.  Here it is:

EL Wire
Batteries
Tiki torches
Torch fuel
5 lb ABC fire exctinguisher
5g Garbage bags, extra heavy duty
2 5g garbage cans with sealable covers
mesh bag for wet garbage
folding table for kitchen
coffee tables
2 burner camping stove
Pots & pans
Metal china
Rubber gloves
Sponge
plastic bin
Plastic bottles or tennis balls to cover the rebar stakes
Vice grips
Sledge hammer
battery-operated drill w/ drill bits
Rug
Bikes
Lawn chairs
couches
Rope
Rebar
2X4s for shower stall
5g camp shower
PVC piping for shower stall
4 2X4s 8 feet long
black plastic sheet, 6mm thickness, 10x10 feet
Nails
Hammer
Staple gun
gloves
wood for lemonade stand
paint for lemonade stand
cooler
Zip lock bags
bike repair kit
grill
glow in the dark spray paint
sun tan lotion
lemonade mix
Tetherball pole and ball
fingerpaint
see saw materials (Yura, figure it out)

That's all I can remember now. Please add, and then we'll finish it off.

Also, I called Budget to see if we should change the rental date from Thursday to Saturday, (I did this a few weeks ago), and they said that if we were to rent it on Saturday, the rate would be $20 higher per day, so it doesn't make sense.  We'll just get the truck on Thursday, and then park it and deliver shit to it, in order to conserve the miles.

Travel Tips

Getting there, and back:

There are two highways off of I-80 that lead towards the Black Rock Desert. The second one is Highway 447, this is the way that BM advises you to go... but it's NOT the best choice. The highway patrol usually preys on those who exit there, I have heard many stories from friends who were stopped soon after exiting. Also, you miss the great view.

The best way is Highway 445 (North, on the way there), which you get to first. I believe it is Exit # 18, just after Reno and before Sparks. Soon after exiting the freeway, you pass a shopping center on the left with last stop food, coffee, supplies, and car wash (useful after BM). You drive from I-80 straight to Pyramid Lake, and when the road ends near the lake make a RIGHT onto Highway 446. You will then drive along the side of scenic Pyramid Lake. Also, you'll avoid most of the patrol cars. When that road ends, turn LEFT onto Highway 447, which will put you on the same road as the first route. As with the other way, make sure to stay within the speed limit after leaving I-80! Don't give anyone a reason to pull you over, because there are plenty of people who would like to, and this is their big season.

And along those lines, remember that there are many officers (clothed and undercover) at BM, be discreet and out of view. Unfortunately, the same goes for scents. Someone at my camp in 2002 was busted because someone smelled the smoke and came to investigate. A lot of incense couldn't hurt.

Try to avoid driving during the middle of the day. As me and Helen discovered recently, the desert heat at mid-day and cars don't mix well together, especially older cars or weak tires. It is so much cooler at night, early morning, or late afternoon.

Pyramid Lake is also a great place to go after BM; to decompress, swim, and camp. You MUST get a permit to camp there, from the tribal office by the intersection of 446 and 447. It is cheap, like $5, also the same for a day-pass. The tribal officers (it is on a reservation) check frequently.

Peace,
Justin

Bikes

I found a hippie flea market in Berkeley and i was able to talk a bike vendor down to $35 for any of three cheap (but fully functional) adult bikes. I think I could talk him down further, and he would be more than willing to part with several more for some more money. How many people need bikes? I have no idea what to do with them afterward, so unless you want to take it with you, be prepared to spend around $40 throw the bike away afterward. Anyway, there is no guarantee I'll ever find this guy again but he said he'd be there next weekend. Let me know!

Pissing on the Commons.

Well,
It seems as if the social leeches have finally found us.

Comment Spam. Lowering the signal to noise ratio..

I'm gonna try to stop it. but who knows.

So if you see comments that are offering you things you really don't want, send me an email. I'll try to fix em....

UPDATE:
I installed a spam detector, but it doesn't automatically filter. Basically I need your halp to fight the spam. I'f you'll login through the front page, you'll notice that some things have changed. There is a manage comments part that will allow you to see all the comments made, and mark them as spam or not, and delete comments that the computer thinks are spam. Please use it often. Newer comments will be higher on the list. thanks.

Update 2:
Spam Problem fixed. Only got two spam under threshold, and both werestill marked as spam, but weakly,( a little bit more training should do it.), offenders have been banned, and hopefully no good comments have suffered. If you think one of yours isn't getting posted let me know.

Cheers,
Bill

Cheap Airfares

Hey Guys,

I don't know how many of you have already bought your plane tickets, but american airlines is having some sort of "fall sale". Roundtrip New York to San Francisco is only $198. You have to buy your ticket before 8/16 and you have to fly after 8/20. I think most tickets are around the $250 zone, so this seems like a good deal. You might have to be part of their frequent flyers club (which I am), so e-mail me if you have any questions. Well, time to make things glow...

Recreational things

so it doesn't look like i'm gonna make it to the dead show in northern va on the 15th since my sister and i need to get the heck across the continent so she can return to va by the 25th. however, i do believe i can find a good connection here for the main thing i planned to go to the show for. i'm actually really bummed, i've made a lot of friends here in va that are planning to go. but that's besides the point. the point is, how much do people want? who wants what? it'll be paper most likely, so that i can send it via birthday card to andrew's house. so let me know guys cuz i have very little time left here and most of that time i'm spending working so as soon as you read this, decide and post and i'll get to work. k then. peace out.

Location, Location, Location...

Claudia just informed me, and I'm relaying the message that we were assigned a primo location at 8:30 and Venus, which is 2 streets in from the Esplanade. We were given 100x50 feet of space, which I think will be enough. If you want to see our assignment for yourself, check it out at:

EL Wire and Couches

OK I'm back in SF and am ready to start doing stuff again. First off, for all those who want to order EL wire, I'll be making a trip down to the wherehouse about a week before we set off. Last year they had a 30% discount, I expect this year to be the same. I'll be taking orders for anybody who wants some, so go to the website and pick out what you want and how much of it, then let me know.

I found some space at my brother's place that can be used to store couches, rugs, futons, or whatever else we can find. I want to make a run around town with a UHaul, but I need to know my budget. Helen, how much did you spend? I remember hearing $60, is that OK with the treasury?
