I received the following news from the playa:
"Some Gigsville folks (Gigsville is a large theme camp), just got back from the playa and here's the scoop: this year is 6 inches of playa powder, so dont bring your 12-speed racing bike and expect to get around. Same for
wheelchairs. Fat nubbed tires for your mountain bike and probably a cheap 3M respirator (not a dust mask) from Staples should do ya
right. Also no bike repair this year in center camp... so be sure to bring
everything ya need!"
Just a head's up. I think that it will make things interesting and fun, but consider your worries about playa dust exacerbated. You couldn't avoid it before, and you won't be able to avoid it now. Unless in th next 45 days there occur some serious wind storms, it's going to remain pretty much the same. However, anything can happen. I'm getting excited. I just bought my tickets to California.
Happy Friday Everyone!
I registered a special event for our camp to be held on Thursday from 4-7pm. Go here: http://www.burningman.com/calendar/playa/view_entry.php?id=1496
to see the entry.
sorry to all those whom this does not apply, but feel free to read it for its entertainment value, not that i'm awake enough yet to be especially witty.
anyway, bill and andrew... where are we on the couch? i figured we are basically where we were when we all split, so the point of this is to bring it up again and see what's up with you guys. you still want to do it, yeah? cuz i'm all about it. if what simon says is true, and i believe him that we missed the early arrival deadline, then we suddenly have a few extra days to work on it that we didn't think we have. anyway, i know you two are mad busy and that andrew's not even back in the country yet, but i figured the sooner i brought it up the better the chances for success. and y'all know me... i hate to see a good idea not be a success. ciao for now!
all of these things below are very important and it's too bad that the vast majority of them are unfinished and just get dropped without resolution. it's time to tackle them starting with, i think, the most important of all, which is when. last night i talked to anita and she is supposed to fly in to sf on the 28th, saturday. i forget what time she's arriving, and i'm sure she'll post it, but since she is riding with me, that means we (plus claudia i believe and plus one more person should someone need it) won't be arriving at the playa until late late saturday or sunday. which is fine with me. i think that sunday will be enough time to make significant progress in structure building, etc., especially since simon and yura will be there too, right? now andrew, forgive me for imposing, but am i crashing at your house too or do i need to find somewhere else? this is something that i need to know like now. i know claudia plans to stay with you. and i know your ma is way cool but i think we'd all feel a bit weird about staying there an extra night after you've hit the road. see where i'm going with this?
related but not the same thing... bill, what's the update? can you take the time off work to ride cross the country with me? if not, leah (my sis) has offered to do it, but i'd rather it be you, no offense to leah. i plan to leave vb on the 15th and drive north to barstow, va for a dead show that i know a lot of people who are going. PEOPLE, this is the time to tell me how many you might like me to pick up while there. we are talking flat stuff only because that shit's goin in the mail.
i've decided to try to do the scavanger hunt actitivity for us and enlist other camps. it could fail cuz i don't have much time these days having just been made manager of the bar i am bartending at down at the oceanfront. if anyone wants to help... in the theme camp registry there is a way to contact camps. pick one you think sounds really cool and then think of a way they could connect into a scanvenger web. if you can't think of anything maybe ask them what they think. also, email them and ask if they'd like to participate. if some of you guys each do one camp then this thing will really work. email me your results at rtg209@nyu.edu and post them on the site so that there's no overlap. thanks y'all!
That's all for now folks. don't you just hate it when you start out with all these ideas and by the time you've typed up a few of them your brain makes this little poofing noise and all the other ideas are suddenly temporarily gone and won't return until 3 and 1/2 hours later?
peace
I hope everybody's enjoying the long weekend, and washing the meat/veggies down with a cold beer, or some combination thereof that leads to intoxication and the watching of the Euro 2004 final tomorrow.
Anyway, per Claudia's recent forward from the Theme Camp people, I would like to discuss the issue of early arrival on the Playa. It turns out that we hae to make a case for why we need to arrive early and who exactly will be arriving. People not approved to arrive early will not be allowed to come. So, we need to think about the following things:
1) What do we need to build and erect on the playa?
-We need to construct the scaffolding, and stretch and secure the parachute on it.
-We need to build the playground, the hardest part of which will probably be the see-saw. I hope that we figure out how to build it before departing for the playa.
-We need to build the lemonade stand, which shouldn't take that long.
-Secure the sails.
2) How long will it take to build these things?
-Depending on the number of peole present at the camp. So, lets say if only 2 people came, they would probably not be even able to put up the parachute. It is huge, and requires a team.
-We do not want to push all the work on a few people.
So, I think that we need to decide whether we should push the truck rental date back one day, so that Andrew and Bill drive there on Saturday, and the rest of us will arrive at 12:01 AM on Monday, August 30th, or we can try to get more people to arrive on Saturday. It seems that it might be a futile proposition to build the camp with only a few people, so the more of us that come to build it the better. But given that the Burning Man organization didn't seem too keen on allowing people to arrive early, a large group of people arriving early might not work out as we planned.
So let's discuss this, and figure it out. Per that e-mail, we need to submit our request for early arrival by July 12th, and they'll reply to us by July 16th.
Also, Bill I didn't mean to sound so stern about the expenditures for our camp. I apologize for my harsh words.
Simon just informed me that I will be charged $1340 for the truck (including a deposit). He has also spent several hundred dollars himself already. It's time to start thinking about communal money and how we're going to do it. Monica mentioned something about Paypal, Bill considered an Escrow account. I say we open a Burning Man Paypal account and everybody put money in to start, and have it reimburse us accordingly. Did we elect a treasurer? Help!
Congratulations to Claudia for getting us registered as a theme camp!
I wanted to run by everyone the possiblity of scheduling a special event for our camp. This would be an event that would be published in the calendar of events and would specifiy time and location of our camp. I think one scheduled event would suffice, but we can always do more.
We should get a consensus on which event we want to invite the entire playa too. Some possible ideas are: fingerpainting, massive charades game, some type of boardgame tournament (if we can get multiple versions of one game - maybe a card game (uno anyone) would be good), ginormous hopscotch? just some suggestions. post back and let me know which idea you prefer. please feel free to suggest new ideas too. once as many people as possible respond we can enter our event into the powers that be.
I think Thursday would be a good day to have our event. By then most everyone will have arrived to the playa.
Please respond with your ideas and imput.
Yo! We're officially a theme camp. Recess in Excess can now be found under the 2004 theme camps and villages webpage! There you can find our nifty little description and my email address in case anyone wants to contact our camp. Unfortunately our website wasn't listed as a URL... I don't understand why since I definitely included that information when registering... but I figure it's not a big loss.
I've been sending out any and all of the theme camp information emails whenever I recieve them... so please read them and inform me, bill, or simon in case you haven't gotten them. These emails inform theme camps and their campers of any rules, regulations, and information that the Planning Committee deems important.
Anyway the registration process is over and we're now legit. The Planning Committe will inform us of our location within Black Rock by the end of July... but for now... that's it folks!
